Professor: Catholic Voters Saw Economy As Moral Issue Catholic voters, who make up a quarter of the American electorate, and young voters helped elect Barack Obama as the first African-American President of the United States on Tuesday night. Nationwide, Obama won 54 percent of the Catholic vote compared with 45 percent for John McCain. Most of the Catholic boost for Obama came from Hispanic Catholics, who now makes up six percent of the electorate. Stephen Schneck, director of the Life Cycle Institute, told the Associated Press that Obama‘s emphasis on service, the communal good, pragmatic solutions and “raising the quality of life for the least among us“ were all Catholic draws. He also emphasized the significance of the economy for... [Read more...]

The Student Association General Assembly is drafting a student bill of rights to respond to what many members described as an unfair and unclear campus judicial system at their meeting Tuesday night. Members said there is confusion between the students and the administration regarding the rights of students in judicial situations. ”You go into [the University Hearing Board] and you don‘t know what is happening. You don‘t know what you are being charged with until after you have been charged with it,” said Alexander Pinnix, a member of SAGA. “You have no counsel. You don‘t know what you‘re rights are, you don‘t know if you even have rights.” Ryan Winn Affifeh Alaween SAGA member Joe Manning, a junior, related a story where a... [Read more...]

The Cardinal’s Nest, a bar located less than half a mile from the University, has once again upset local Brookland residents. Residents have complained to the management about the patrons’ behavior and the loud music. “They’ve kind of antagonized the neighborhood that was supportive of them when they opened,” said John Vera, an eight year resident of Brookland. “This whole block becomes like Adams Morgan.” Dino Drudi, a Brookland resident and advocate within the community, described in an e-mail an incident last Friday involving an overly loud band and police involvement. “The police announced, ‘Clear the streets!’ and the police helicopter flew over once or twice and shined its spotlight on the area.” Drudi said he lost... September 12, 2008 by Sarah Favo · Leave a Comment
Princeton College Review has named the University to the list of the “Top 20 Wired Colleges” as one of the most technologically advanced colleges in the nation. William Lantry, director of Academic Technology Services at the Center for Planning and Information Technology, says the University was named ‘Wired’ because of the way it uses pre-existing technology in new ways and how it shares technology. “Everything is a collaborative process,” said Lantry. Dustin White, a member of CPIT’s Academic Technology Services, said its open door policy contributed to the recognition. “We try very hard to listen to the customer’s needs,” said White. Listening to students allows CPIT to see and fill needs, such as filling the need for... [Read more...]

Speaker Matt Glowacki Discusses Predjudice With ‘Family Guy’
April 25, 2008 by Sarah Favo · Leave a Comment
By: Sarah Favo The second clip from Family Guy was about ‘able-ism’ or treating people differently because of their disability. He called this as ‘gimp-phobic’. People tend to over accommodate, or ignore people who are disabled. “It is as normal for me to use a wheelchair as it is for you to walk around,” said Glowacki to the group gathered in the Pryzbla Food Court. In fact, he prefers the wheelchair because he can move around for a long time, while people who walk can’t. He used himself as an example saying he is still active as a DJ, gives talks to different people and makes custom wheelchairs. The wheelchair he uses is one he made himself. He made his point that people must see potential in others.... [Read more...]
