Garbarino Elected 114th Tower Editor-in-Chief

Justine Garbarino was Elected Tower Editor-in-Chief this week. Justine Garbarino, a sophomore Media Studies major from Allentown, PA was elected as the 114th editor-in-chief of the Tower on Sunday night. “I was really excited when I won,” said Garbarino. “My competitor was really qualified and it was a really close race.” Garbarino ran against sophomore Michael Oliva. Garbarino has been a member of the Tower since her freshman year, and has served as a news writer, assistant news editor and news editor. She is also co-editor of the 2009 Cardinal Yearbook, a D.C. Alumnus is Interesting Test of University Speaker‘s Policy The College Democrats are trying to bring former Democratic National Committee Chairman and University alum Terry McAuliffe to speak on campus. McAuliffe would be asked to speak about his life, the 2008 election and the future of the Democratic Party. Terry McAuliffe, former Democratic National Convention chairman and University alumnus seen here at a 2004 event in the Pryzbyla Center, may not be allowed to speak on campus because he announced his run for VA governor. Members of Now Defunct Senators Club Gather in Pryz for Bi-Annual Luncheon

Alumni of the University’s Senators Club met in the Great Room of the Pryzbyla Center Thursday for one of their bi-annual luncheons. Members of the club who graduated during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s were the majority of attendees. Pictured are members of the Senators Club in 1964. Senators Club alumni gathered in the Pryzbyla Center this week for their bi-annual luncheon. “It was great. We had a full house. They just love this school,” said Martin Dowd, men’s tennis coach and class of 1960 graduate, after the event. College Democrats, Republicans Help Out in Virginia, PA

Danielle Beck and her fellow College Republicans knocked on over 5,000 doors in the Scranton, PA area last week campaigning for Republican Presidential Nominee John McCain and congressional candidate Lou Barletta. On Tuesday evening, Beck found herself calling Joe St. George and the College Democrats to congratulate them on the election of Barack Obama and the sweeping victory of congressional Democrats. The College Democrats celebrated the election of Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Tuesday night after spending the fall campaigning in key states, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. CUA Alum Longest Standing Dem. Chair

John Bailey, B.A. 1926 served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1961 to 1968, the longest term of any chairman in history. Jump in Liquor Violations Due to Administrative Oversight, Says CUA

Craig Parker, University General Counsel, called the increase in alcohol violations an “anomaly” in a recent article of the Brookland Heartbeat, a local newsletter. The article cites him as saying the Office of the Dean of Students is tallying numbers differently this year than in the past. He also said that campus officials expect the number of violations in to drop back to previous levels, as they returning to former recording methods. Changes have been made to the how violations for underage possession of alcohol are counted this year, which Parker says is the reason for the increase in numbers. Students who are in the vicinity of alcohol while underage have been given a citation, whereas in previous years, only students caught drinking... [Read more...]
Journalist Speaks to College Democrats on U.S.-Iran Relations

Barbara Slavin, distinguished foreign correspondent and author of the book “Bitter Friends, Bosom Enemies: Iran, the U.S, and the Twisted Path to Confrontation” spoke to University students on Wednesday night about U.S-Iranian relations and missed opportunities for reconciliation. The speech was sponsored by the College Democrats. “It was interesting. She presented a different picture of global relations than I’m used to hearing on the news,” said freshman Felicia Charles. “She was fantastic. Quiznos to Open Wed. After Two Year Delay

After two years of construction delays and paperwork setbacks, Quizno’s will open up in the food court next week. On Wednesday, October 15th, Quizno’s will finally open in the Pryzbyla Center Food Court, according to CUA Dining Services. “It’s going to be awesome,” said freshman theology major Dillon Scherer. Quizno’s was originally supposed to open in the Pryzblya Center during the 2005-2006 school year. However, at that time they had yet to obtain the necessary permits to begin construction. The same problem occurred last year as well with Quizno’s not obtaining the necessary permits and paperwork. The new Quizno’s will replace Java City in the food court. Catholic University Clarifies Speaker Policy

Political candidates can speak on campus with University approval from Rev. David M. O’Connell, according to the University’s newly expanded political activity guidelines for student organizations. “No candidates running for election are to be invited for anything without express permission of the President,” the policy states. “No politicians who have public positions that run counter to the teachings of the Catholic Church are to be invited for anything without express permission from the President.” The upcoming election has been influential in the University’s decision to finally state an otherwise unwritten rule about political candidates. “Things have ramped up between 2000-2008,” said Craig Parker, the University’s... CUA Trustee Places Anti-Biden Ads

The Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus and member of the University’s Board of Trustees, Carl A. Anderson, published an open letter to vice-presidential candidate Senator Joseph Biden in USA Today, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Washington Times and the Delaware New Journal on Sept. 19. In his letter, Anderson attacked Biden’s support for abortion rights and Biden’s belief that the Catholic Church has not been consistent in its teachings on abortion. “I’m prepared as a matter of faith to accept that life begins at the moment of conception,” said Biden on NBC’s Meet the Press on September 7. “But that is my judgment.
