CUA Students Protest Prop. 8 on Mall
November 21, 2008 by Lieren S. Allen · 3 Comments
University students attended a protest on Nov. 15 against Proposition 8, a ballot which eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry in California, as they braved the rain marching from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. More than 5,000 people ranging “from gay and straight, young and old, black and white,” said senior Erin Murphy, who attended the protest. “It was, in every sense of the word, an inclusive affair, and being directly in the midst of the action was an irreplaceable experience,” Murphy said. “It is not until you actually throw yourself out there that you realize how many people are negatively and unfairly affected by legislation like Prop 8.” [Read more...] Read More →

With a subject line reading “12th and Lawrence,” resident assistants on campus opened their inboxes to this message from Area Coordinator Ryan McKinney October 3. “RAs, spread the word. Do NOT go to this party. If you do it might be your last at CUA.” Earlier in the week, students across campus received a Facebook invitation from junior Vicky Mahoney’s Facebook page to the “175th Oktoberfest” at a house on 12th and Lawrence, a half mile from campus, on Saturday, October 4. The invitation also had an extensive list of the alcoholic beverages that were to be available, including 900 beers, a jug of Puerto Rican Lemonade, a two-story beer bong, a ski shot, a gin bucket and Jell-O shooters. Friday morning, junior John CoFrancesco,... [Read more...]
Fr. Bob Celebrates 25 Years as Priest

Rev. Robert Schlageter, also known as Father Bob, chaplain and director of Campus Ministry, celebrated his 25th anniversary of the priesthood this past Sunday. The University Mass is supposed to start at 9 p.m., but was delayed ten minutes. “This is the first time in 11 years that I have been late for a 9 o’clock mass, and on my anniversary! That’s not a good sign,” said Schlageter. Clad in his familiar Franciscan garb, he told the congregation somewhere between Centennial Village and St. Vincent’s, the notes for his homily had fallen out of his pocket. “That’s probably a shorter homily for you lucky birds,” he joked. “My guardian angel came down and took them from me.” During his homily, Schlageter described his journey... No More Free Cups for Water in Pryz Food Court
September 26, 2008 by Lieren S. Allen · Leave a Comment
The downstairs food court in the Pryzbyla center removed the availability of tap water in complimentary cups, requiring students who prefer water to purchase bottles of Dasani, a purified-water produced by Pepsi. In a disgruntled letter, students Kelly Wilson and Alex Carroll expressed their distaste with the change, stating their desire for the “the icy water that freely flowed into [their] eco-friendly water bottles from the soda machines.” When approached, a “manager of the food court stated people were abusing it.” The substitution of complimentary cups for water with the forced option of bottled water, according to Kara Fenn, co-founder of the Green Club, is not an environmentally sound or student-friendly policy.“ “I just... Blessing Brigade Sprinkles Spirituality: Campus Ministry Keeps Up Annual Tradition in Dorms
September 23, 2008 by Lieren S. Allen · Leave a Comment
Residents of Walton were dually blessed last night: both by Father Andy Santamauro’s holy water and Jeff Ossisinger’s singing. As Ossinger, associate campus Minister for retreats and men’s Issues, walked ahead of Santamauro and House Minister Dan Varroney, he banged on doors all the way down the hall singing “prepare thee the way of the Lord” and greeted Walton residents with an enthusiastic smile. To every open door, Ossinger offered a hand shake and a grin, “You ready to get your room blessed?” Santamauro pointed at him and just shrugged, “And I’m supposed to be the priest.” Like a brigade for the Holy Spirit, this boisterous group of gentlemen pounded on doors for an hour, chatting with residents who opened their...
