Gibbons Residents Make Opus Room Selections

Residents in Gibbons Hall selected their rooms for next semester on Monday, as they prepare to move to Opus Hall next semester due to renovations that are planned to take place in Gibbons Hall. The housing lottery, which began at 4:00 p.m., had problems, as the MyHousing section of Cardinal Station was unavailable due to computer problems. MyHousing came back online 15 minutes after Housing Services contacted the Center for Planning and Information Technology, according to Todd Troke, assistant director of Housing Services. University Honors Employees on 10th, 20th Anniversaries

University President Rev. David M. O’Connell and University Chaplain Rev. Robert Schlageter were among 68 members of the University community who were honored for their service Tuesday night in the Pryzbyla Center. The University honored employees who have given 10 and 20 years of service to the University. Prior to the award ceremony, honorees and guests were served dinner and enjoyed entertainment by Take Note A Capella. President’s Society member Claire Bordelon pins a flower on Renell Lewis, director of treasury management (10 yrs.). Those who were honored ranged from administrators, maintenance personnel, professors, support staff and a Department of Public Safety Officer. In Phone Call, Pope Congratulates Obama

President-elect Barack Obama returned a phone call to Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday after his election to the presidency last week. Obama phoned the pope “to thank the pope for his telegram, his congratulations” on the election said Rev. Federico Lombardi, chief spokesman for Pope Benedict XVI, in a CathNews article. Pope Benedict XVI had sent a telegram to Obama last Wednesday, congratulating him on his election as the 44 President of the United States, as well as being the first African American ever elected. The pope also said he would keep Obama and the U.S. in his prayers. DPS Says They Have Right to ‘Observe’ Off-Campus Events

The Department of Public Safety says that when they receive complaints about students off campus they have the right to observe what is going on in residential neighborhoods. According to Cheryl Pendergast, Associate Director of the Department of Public Safety, fresh pursuit is not the same as DPS observing and patrolling areas off campus. “We know we have no authority off campus in residential places like Lawrence Street,” said Pendergast. Earlier this year it was reported that DPS officers have been going to parties and patrolling neighborhoods where students live. Obama, McCain Exchange Lighthearted Jabs at Dinner Honoring Former CUA Trustee

Last week on October 18, both Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) and Sen. John McCain (R- AZ) spoke at the 2008 Alfred E. Smith dinner. The dinner, which was organized by the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation, raised $3.9 million dollars for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York. Smith who was a four term Governor of New York (1919-1920 and 1923-1928), was the first Catholic to be a nominee of a major political party. Correspondent One returned to his room on 10/17/08 at 0001 hours and discovered his property had been removed. Correspondent One’s room was left unlocked and unoccupied. Three Cars Parked by DuFour Center are Broken Into

Three vehicles were broken into between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the DuFour Center parking lot on Monday. An unknown suspect broke into the vehicles after smashing the windows of the cars, according to a Department of Public Safety report. Property was stolen from two vehicles, including cell phones and credit cards. “DPS advises students, staff and faculty to ensure that their vehicles are locked when they leave them,” said Cheryl Pendergast, associate director of DPS, in an e-mail. “They should never leave any items such as loose change, purses, briefcases, GPS devices, clothes, equipment, iPods, MP3s players, radios in plain sight. Hometown: Gainesville, Florida Major: PhD candidate, Philosophy PhD candidate and freelance writer Micah Tillman is about to finish his dissertation here at the University. He recently spoke to the Tower about music, philosophy, faith and the intersection of the three. Q. How did you become interested in Philosophy? A. It was my mom. I was home schooled and she taught a co-op class for other families that were home schooling. One of the classes she taught was on Philosophy, and she was so engaged in it and taught it so well that I became interested in it and tried to take as many philosophy classes as I could when I was an undergraduate. Fed Botched Bailout

Once again, bureaucrats in Washington ruin the day.  You probably heard something about the bailout that occurred a few Metro stops away from campus. $700 billion dollars of taxpayers money going to the richest people in the United States because OOPS! They screwed up. The leadership of our country: the White House, Wall Street crony Paulson, the leaders of the house and senate and yes even our beloved Speaker Nancy Pelosi all said we have to act to save our economy and the world. Yet while they were saying this last Wednesday; stocks were up 400+ percent. Nursing School Receives 150k Grant for Accelerated Program

The University’s School of Nursing received a $150,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for the 2008-2009 academic school year. The grant will provide $10,000 for 15 students in the school’s accelerated baccalaureate nursing program. The school is one of 58 nursing schools in the U.S. to receive funding through the grant. The accelerated program is designed for students who switched their major to nursing from a different area of study. This funding is aimed to increase the amount of nurses in the workforce across the country. Scholarships will be given to students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and students who come from groups underrepresented in the nursing field, according to a University press release.
