University President Rev. David M. O’Connell and University Chaplain Rev. Robert Schlageter were among 68 members of the University community who were honored for their service Tuesday night in the Pryzbyla Center.

The University honored employees who have given 10 and 20 years of service to the University. Prior to the award ceremony, honorees and guests were served dinner and enjoyed entertainment by Take Note A Capella.

Those who were honored ranged from administrators, maintenance personnel, professors, support staff and a Department of Public Safety Officer.

Schlageter, who had to leave early to hear confessions in Spellman Hall, was the first person to receive an award.

Frank Persico, vice president for University Relations and chief of staff to O’Connell, served as master of ceremonies and praised Schlageter’s ministry at the University. He said Schlageter’s work has impacted many hearts and souls.

“He has transformed the Catholic University of America into a Catholic home away from home for thousands of students,” said Persico.

Senior Nicholas Berg introduced O’Connell and praised his leadership during his presidency, in which the University has seen an unprecedented growth.

“He leads the University with fair and compassionate demeanor,” said Berg.

“He’s a great man, he cares about the individual and he really cares about the school,” said Berg, a member of the President’s Society.

O’Connell was visibly emotional during the introduction. In his statement, O’Connell thanked the University community for allowing him the opportunity to serve as president.

“These 10 years have been a blast,” said O’Connell. “They have gone by very, very quickly and it has been a great opportunity for me to serve as a priest.”

Despite the milestone O’Connell reached, he said the night was not about him, but about all the people who were being honored.

One of the honorees was David Guillet, professor of Anthropology who has been at the University since 1987. He was honored for 20 years of service.

Guillet said he enjoys the different experiences with his students and their questions. He also said the way he approaches his classes has changed somewhat because of the change in students.

“Students have become more multicultural, religious and engaged with problems and social justice,” Guillet said.

Suzanne McCarthy, assistant vice president for University Relations, was honored for 10 years of service to the University.

She said the biggest change she has seen since coming here is the community atmosphere and the inclusiveness between the administration, faculty and students.

Besides her duties as an assistant vice president, she has also served for the past four years as the recording secretary for the Board of Trustees.

“It’s a very nice part of my position,” McCarthy said. “I really feel the pulse of everything that’s happening.”

Also honored for 20 years of service were Cynthia and Gregory Brewer. The Brewers began teaching in the chemistry department in 1987. The Brewers, parents of three children, saw their eldest son enroll in the University this year.

Gregory Brewer praised the students at the University and said since he started teaching, the students always contribute in the classroom in a positive way.

“We get some exceptionally qualified, talented and dedicated people and also people who are respectful of the institution,” he said.

Cynthia Brewer said she could see herself at the University for the rest of her career.

“I like it here. This is a home and I’m pleased my son chose to come here,” she said.
