B.J. Novak, actor and writer for the television show “The Office,” will speak at the University on November 11.
Novak, who was invited by Program Board, will perform a 45-minute stand-up comedy routine in the Pryzbyla Center Great Room. Following the performance, there will be a meet and greet with Novak.
“This is probably the biggest event” that most of the long-term students have seen, said Andee Fisher, Program Board president.
Novak plays Ryan Howard on NBC Emmy winning show “The Office,” a mockumentary about the lives of employees at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in Scranton, P.A. Novak has also written eight episodes of the show. He has appeared on MTV‘s “Punk‘d” and in the films “Unaccompanied Minors,” “Reign Over Me,” and “Knocked Up.”
The Student Fee Allocation Board allocated $26,130 to Program Board for Novak to come to the University. The money will go towards paying Novak, advertising, security and concessions.
“We started thinking about having him come last spring, but really hit the ground when we came back in August,” said Fisher.
“It involved a lot of back and forth with his agent,” said Nick Petropoulos, Program Board treasurer. Program Board negotiated more than ten different dates.
Tickets for University students are $12. The cost for faculty, staff, and graduate students, including students in the Columbus School of Law, is $18. Any D.C. area college student can get a ticket for $20. The event will also be open to the general public, as well. The general public cost is $25.
“We want everyone to come. We want to sell out,” said Fisher.
Program Board is planning to advertise through Facebook advertisements, signs around campus and press releases to other universities. They will also be advertising in the Tower.
There will be a cash bar starting at 7:15 p.m., provided by Aramark, before Novak’s routine at 8:30 p.m. APO will end their blood drive early in order for Program Board to set up for the event.
“I hope the CUA community comes out. I want everyone to be there,” said Petropoulos.

I feel for $26,130 that they could have gotten someone better. Does the student body have any say in who comes to speak here? Rudy was great and I thought Belding was pretty good. But I think that the Program Board should think of a list of candidates and let the student body decide in a poll who they would most like to come and see.
Not a bad choice but there were other people better for $26,000+.
