The University’s School of Nursing received a $150,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for the 2008-2009 academic school year. The grant will provide $10,000 for 15 students in the school’s accelerated baccalaureate nursing program.
The school is one of 58 nursing schools in the U.S. to receive funding through the grant. The accelerated program is designed for students who switched their major to nursing from a different area of study. This funding is aimed to increase the amount of nurses in the workforce across the country.
Scholarships will be given to students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and students who come from groups underrepresented in the nursing field, according to a University press release.
To date, five University students enrolled in the program have been notified they will be receiving awards. Ten percent of students enrolled in the school of nursing are enrolled in the accelerated nursing program.
