Steve Krieder may get mistaken for a student, but he’s far from it. As Program Coordinator for University Center, Student Programs and Events, Krieder deals on a daily basis with student organization finances, event planning and everything else under the sun. The University’s old motto, “Do It All,” could be his personal creed. In an interview with The Tower, Krieder talks Frisbee, television and grilling.
Why did you come to Catholic?
“The reason I came to Catholic was because all of my experience had been in large public institutions. I wanted to get some experience working in a smaller institution where you get to take on a variety of experiences rather than being well versed in one experience.”
Milky Way or Snickers?
“Snickers. When I was growing up, we used to vacation in Myrtle Beach each year. We would always get a bunch of bags of the mini candy bars and freeze them. My four brothers and I would eat them all week and I’d always eat a ton of Snickers.”
B.J. Novak is coming to CUA. Are you a fan of “The Office?”
“I love the Office. I never miss it. Unfortunately I’m probably going to miss it (last night) because it is the first game of the National League Championship Series and I got to root on my Phils.”
You’re big on Ultimate Frisbee?
“I’ve played competitively for almost 6 years. I co-captain a DC Co-Ed team that travels to tournaments all over the Mid-Atlantic region. I also captained, coached, and founded the team at the University of Memphis when I was in grad school.”
How many times a week are you mistaken for a student?
“Not many anymore. It happens every single time I am coming back to campus, after going home for a while because then I’ll change out of my work clothes. But for the most part this year most of my meetings or events are close enough to after work that I just stay through to the end. The shirt and tie helps, but whenever I dress down, people think I am a student.”
So, you are kind of a grill master?
“I am a huge grill guy. I actually have a grilling belt that I got for being a best man at one of my best friend’s weddings. It is a belt that has slots for the spatula, the tongs, and the knife, and I wear it whenever I grill.”
What is your biggest challenge in your job?
“The biggest challenge in my job is probably trying to hold students accountable and have them learn and grow as student leaders. In some cases I feel for the students and I want them to succeed but in some cases failing is what helps a student needs to grow. That is one of the hardest things to do is to watch a student or a student organization fail.”
So you’re wife is an area coordinator at Maryland?
“Yeah, but they don’t call them that. They call them resident directors. She’s got a eight story building with 15 RAs that she supervises and runs.”
What’s it like living at the University of Maryland?
“It’s a very different school. It’s a large public university, which is what I am more used to previous to working here. One of the biggest differences is that they have a lot more students and a lot more student organizations. They wouldn’t have someone in my position who coordinates the student organizations and also does the financials for Student Organizations.”
You’re wearing pink. Can guys pull off wearing pink?
“I actually have no problem with men wearing pink. I personally don’t like pink. This is baby pink, so I can pull it off.”
