Letters to the Editor

Stephanie Calhoun’s “News Has a Higher Purpose” defines each component of “independent student newspaper”.  She attempts of define in a short space “indepenent”, “student”, and “newspaper”.  But her definition of “newspaper” is really only a definition of the “news” part of “newspaper”.  Let me finish the rest:

Paper- In an increasingly virtual world, even at the country’s “most wired university the Tower believes readers should be able to glance over or thoroughly read the newspaper at breakfast, on the way to class, while riding on the Metro, between innings, etc without having to haul along a $1,500 laptop.  The Tower is printed on newsprint, stacked in fancy new red boxes, and available all over campus and the nearby neighborhood so you can pick it up and read it anywhere, anytime, without any special equipment.
Thank you for still being a newsPAPER.

Can someone please provide some logical reasoning for the Pryz food court getting rid of water and the two microwaves?  Remember the icy water that freely flowed into our eco-friendly water bottles from the soda machines last year?  It is gone and replaced with bottled water for us to purchase.

When asked where the water went, a manager of the food court stated that people were abusing it.  Can someone please tell me how one abuses ‘free water’?  But that is neither here nor there.  One can only assume bottled water cuts a nice profit.  So much for increasing waste; abusing the environment must be better than abusing free water.  But that cannot be the reasoning, because I cannot imagine a Catholic institution caring more about profitability than the environment.

Now to make matters even worse they have gotten rid of the microwaves.  Dear God why?  How am I supposed to nuke the hot-dish I brought from home for lunch?  Oh, yes, that is right.  I guess I will need to purchase something from the Pryz food court (lucky them).  This leads me to wonder if someone within the Pryz’s management has me confused with a millionaire who can shell out $8 plus a day on food and drinks.  Let me assure management, according to Sallie Mae, a millionaire I am not.

I hope the money is worth the all the inconvenience it creates for faculty, staff, and students.  Please bring the water and microwaves back.

Regarding Jessica Carter’s bit about the bookstore, both professors and Teaching Assistants have been frustrated that the bookstore dropped the ball on ordering books. Many professors submitted their book lists far in advance of the deadline. The bookstore, however, ordered the books late and did not order the quantity requested by professors.  I understand that not every professor submitted lists on time, but Jessica needs to distribute a little bit of her righteous anger at the bookstore. Such issues also frustrate professors!
